This week we are discussing different foreign and domestic issue policies. One thing that ties these ideas across the world is economics. Different countries and cultures see issues around wealth differently, and yet, we all have to live in the same world and work together in different ways.

For this reason, we are also taking a look at Capitalism and Socialism - both what they are and also how each is implemented in different ways in the United States as well as in other countries.

  • We discussed his motivations and the concerns of the State.
  • We watched some of the video to better understand who this person is and what the motives were.

Considerations
  • In a larger context of security vs. privacy and freedoms, the question that the United States citizens is asking is one that relates to how much freedom should the people give up in order to secure safety.
  • The American forefathers recognized the dangers of tyranny, and were generally very strongly in favor of individual freedoms and limitations on government. However, as the world changes, so do the challenges that we face as a nation.

10.22 - Decisions, Decisions

10/22/2019

In Class
  • We discussed the difficult issues of what happens when some laws seem to contradict others such as in the same-sex marriage and discrimination debates.
  • We discussed the issues surrounding having weaker government structures and confusion that can arise when certain aspects of government are not easy to access.
  • We researched the upcoming elections for MSB School Board

Considerations
  • Remember that people will always have areas of fundamental interest that may be in conflict with others. As citizens, we have to consider many differing opinions and also be willing to see them as valid, even if we disagree. It does not mean we need to agree, but that we should be willing to both listen and do so with the intention to understand rather than just prepare a reply. If, after finding we cannot come to an agreement, we must still figure out civil ways to exist together, without having to compromise.

Homework
  • Complete School Board Candidates in Canvas
    • Remember that you need to find out what district you live in and if you are voting this time. If you have already submitted, just reply to yourself with the parts you need to finalize for your full points.
