Remember, I will be out of the building on Thursday at the 2020 MSC Tech Expo, so we will not have any more class.

That said, you still have some assignments in Canvas you need to complete. Please make sure you do that by the end of the week.

Thank you for a great class you guys.  I hope you learned some things that will last with you and that you feel it was a good use of your time.

  • This week we studied some of Hemingway's writing style - keeping the words to a minimum, but forcing our brains to realize what he is saying without knowing it.
  • We also studied his use of simple, but effective dialogue that allows the reader to know who is talking without having to waste words saying it.

Homework
  • Complete your "Hemingway Short"
  • Read and complete the assignment for "The Last Leaf"

1.17 - Literary Naturalism - Setting

1/17/2020

Discussion
  • We have spent a  lot of time really think about our characters, about details that give us insight into their nature, etc. Remember that your character needs to have an arch of some kind still. With  a declining plot, you will usually still have a rising character arch.
  • In thinking of setting, we are thinking of all of the things that are so important to knowing what is available and what constraints are placed on our character. We think of why they are in the situation they are in and if that is part of the story.

Homework
  • Read The Open Boat and compete assignment in Canvas
  • Complete Literary Naturalism - Setting in Canvas
    • Start thinking of how you can incorporate what we are learning to a deeper level in your survival story (I guess its not much of a survival story in some cases).

10.14 - Naturalism & Character

1/14/2020

Today we discussed To Build a Fire and how it is an example of literary naturalism. We also discussed the importance of character growth in these stories. We discussed the fact that characters grow, even if they do reach a demise and that we can find humanity and our own story in some of what they experience.

We also discussed the following:
  • The use of a foil character
  • The use of repetition and foreshadowing

HOMEWORK
  • Make sure you have TBaF read
  • Complete Literary Naturalism - Your Character in Canvas
    • Start thinking of how you can incorporate what we are learning to a deeper level in your survival story (I guess its not much of a survival story in some cases).

1.10 - Naturalism

This next week or so, we are looking into Naturalism in the literary context.

Hey guys,

I am really sorry. I found out that our An Open Boat story was printed wrong too. I thought it was right. I didnt get your homework up. Here is what I would like. If you can just have To Build a Fire read with Talking to the Text done, that would be perfect.

Thanks and I will be on it more after tomorrow.
